Agriculture and forestry

The CRCF provides voluntary certification for carbon farming and carbon removals; land-use and forestry emissions are accounted under LULUCF, and nutrient management is governed by the Nitrates Directive.

Reference only: this dossier is public compliance research, not legal advice, and draws no compliance conclusion. Whether a duty applies depends on product classification (CN code), role (importer, EU producer, downstream purchaser), cumulative volumes and Member State application; rely on the legal text and the competent authority.

Duty Trigger Evidence needed Timing Legal source
Carbon Apply for carbon farming/carbon removal certification (CRCF) Certification schemes must meet quality criteria such as quantification, additionality, permanence and avoidance of double counting. Applying for certification of carbon farming, permanent carbon removals or product carbon storage Activity design document, baseline, monitoring plan and independent third-party verification Voluntary from 2024 Reg (EU) 2024/3012
Carbon Land use and forestry greenhouse gas accounting (LULUCF) Carbon sinks/emissions from agricultural and forestry land use are included in Member States' LULUCF accounting. Operating agricultural, forestry or other land use (aggregated through Member State accounting) Ledger of land use and carbon stock changes 2021–2030 accounting period Reg (EU) 2018/841 (as amended by Reg (EU) 2023/839)
